During the past two summers, I traveled to Porcupine, South Dakota on Pine Ridge Reservation. As part of a project pioneered by Tracy Taylor from Lake Forest College, I helped teach a summer middle school class about digital media, animation, and introductory programming. We used Alice, a programming education software kit developed by Carnegie Mellon University, to introduce the basic concepts of computer science to the students. For details on the program, including pictures, descriptions of lesson plans, and comments on the success of the summer course, visit my blog On the Reservation.
